The competencies of architectural design and urban planning acquired in the Bachelor degree - technical, constructive, legal and social knowledge, as well as the ability to develop convincing designs - are deepened in the Master's program.

At TU Berlin, the design project is the central element of the project-oriented studies in Architecture. The design tasks are conceptually, constructively, or urban oriented. Since the beginning of the winter term 2012/13, one has the opportunity to choose between two main areas, building construction or urban planning. For both, architectural space is considered a synthesis of conceptual ideas, spatial concepts and constructive or urbanistic structures.

The goal is to train architects who are capable of making decisions and developing designs that can translate concrete tasks into architectural or urban designs, and to provide the tools and equipment one needs, as well as the responsibility toward the environment (energy and resource conservation), the clients (function, program, identity) and society (cultural, artistic, social). Various linkings with other disciplines, the cooperation with energy experts, civil engineers, art historians, city and regional planners, landscape architects, artists and other experts, offer the opportunity to set individual preferences throughout one’s studies. Field trips and encounters with built reality enrich the studies and connect teaching with planning practice.

Target Group

The consolidating Master program in Architecture adresses national and international applicants with a Bachelor degree or diploma in architecture or other comparable disciplines. Since many students and some of the lecturers come from abroad, some courses are held in English, especially the design studios. Therefore, applicants should be willing to learn and communicate in foreign languages. Already today, up to one-fifth of all students in the Master program are international students from Europe or the rest of the world.

The course of study concludes with the title Master of Science in Architecture and prepares for different, above all, self organized activities in various professional fields. In essence, the degree allows one to run an architecture firm in order to be able to work on concrete construction tasks in architecture and urban planning. The chamber entry as "architect" requires an additional, two-year practical experience.
